2010 Updates and Outlooks
|
1.) With the State and City still in a financial bind, we will not be able to look
for government money in 2010. The Club has applied for a grant from the
State-funded DCED Program. There are two other areas we are seeking funding
from. At the present time we will have to take 2010 one step at a time. Many
funding ideas are being hashed out by Board members. We are trying to keep
registrations as low as we can! More updates can be found here in the near
future.
2.) In 2009 we did not have our Travel Awards Banquet, which marked the
first time in 44 years. It would have cost the club approximately $4,300 just in
trophy cost. If everything goes right this year, we are planning on having a
banquet in November 2010. We will know more in June.
3.) Our staff continues to be amazed at the growth the Club is experiencing.
With all that is going on and all the many things that may happen to our Club, we
still have a huge need for volunteers. There are many areas we need help with.
Again your children are the future of the Club. The more volunteers we have, the
better our program becomes. We feel all help is needed but, most of all, from
parents who have children in our In-house Programs. With many lives being
changed and affected by the changing time, our staff has less time to give than in
the past. All volunteers will be welcomed - even if it 's only for a few hours here
and there. The Club is definitely in a work overload.
Back on December 9, 2009, a Fishtown AC icon passed away. Jack
was part of Fishtown AC & Fishtown AC Alumni for over 50 years.
Jack started out coaching football for Holy Name before becoming a
baseball coach for Fishtown AC Boys 16-19 years old.
Jack coached baseball, basketball, served as Athletic Director and
President for Fishtown AC, then in 1990 started the Alumni, where he
served as President for 19 years.
A few of the things people may not know is Jack also had a Roller
Hockey Team he coached out of Fishtown AC in the late 1970s, he
also saved the club from going under a few times.
Jack and Dan Shissler Sr. brought in the carnival as means for funds
when the club's future looked dim. Other notable things about him
include:
- Jack coached JV baseball at North Catholic
- He was a pro scout for Pittsburgh and Detroit
- He was named as one of the top 40 volunteers of
Philadelphia all time in 2004 by KYW
- He was named to Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2005
- And Jack is one of 10 people to be named to Fishtown AC's Top
Volunteers of all time.
- Jack also was a long time member of the Men's softball night
league (Hetzells)
When Fishtown AC is mentioned anywhere, most people think of Jack
Moore. As a tribute to such a person, Fishtown AC has retired #14
(baseball only) in memory of Jack Moore. A ceremony will happen
before 2010 is over. Jack will be deeply missed by many, and will be in
hearts forever. We hope Jack will be remembered not just as a big
part of Fishtown AC but as a great friend to all.
